Rubber bridge is a form of social bridge that use a specific scoring system to determine the winner of a rubber. In rubber bridge, players scores points in two different sections on a score sheet. The first partnership to win two games wins the rubber.

Points is scored in both sections below the line and above the line. Points scored below the line include the contract trick value for the game, which are used to win games. Points scored above the line are bonus for the game, such as honors, slams, and the rubber bonus for winning the rubber.

How to Score in Rubber Bridge

Contract trick values are awarded to the winning partnership for make the contract that was bid on. Minor suit contracts award twenty points for every trick made, major suit contracts award thirty points for every trick made, and notrump contracts award forty points for the first trick and thirty points for each trick after that. For instance, if a partnership bids on four spades and makes the contract, they will score one hundred twenty points.

These points bring a partnership more closer to winning a game which requires one hundred points to be scored. If the contract is doubled, the contract points is multiplied, and the scoring of overtricks change. If the contract is doubled, overtricks is no longer scored at the value of the suit contract, but instead, are scored as a minimum of one hundred point.

If the contract is redoubled, the contract points are quadrupled, and the value of overtricks is also quadrupled. Vulnerability is a value that change based off the games that are won by a partnership. At the beginning of a rubber, both partnerships have a value of being not vulnerable.

After one partnership wins a game, the winning partnership become vulnerable and the other partnership becomes nonvulnerable. If a partnership is vulnerable, they will score more points for undertricks. For instance, an undertrick with a doubled contract by a vulnerable partnership may score two hundred points, but the same undertrick with a nonvulnerable partnership may score only one hundred points.

Bonus points is scored above the line, and these bonus points do not contribute to winning games. Honors are bonus points that are earned based on high value cards in the trump suit. For instance, if a partnership has four honors in the trump suit, they earn one hundred points, but if a partnership has five honors in there trump suit, they earn one hundred fifty points.

Small slams award five hundred points for nonvulnerable partnerships, but seven hundred fifty points for vulnerable partnerships. Grand slams award one thousand points for nonvulnerable partnerships and fifteen hundred points for vulnerable partnerships. Finally, the winning partnership is awarded the rubber bonus for winning the rubber.

For instance, if a partnership wins the rubber two-zero, they earn seven hundred points for winning the rubber, but if they win the rubber two-one, they only earn five hundred points for winning the rubber. An error in scoring rubber bridge may occur if the partnership cannot remember how many games they have won and how many games they need to win the rubber to determine vulnerability and penalties. Additionally, if a player forgets to account for the points that is scored each game by each partnership, their score will not accurately reflect the games they have won.

For instance, if a partnership scores sixty points below the line on one game, they will need forty more points to win the game. A person must keep track of the points below the line to determine when a partnership reach the necessary points to win a game. A person must also keep track of the points awarded above the line to determine the bonuses that a partnership scores for that deal of rubber bridge.

The score sheet for rubber bridge tracks both the games that each partnership has won and the bonuses that each partnership has earn. Additionally, a person must correctly track the points for the partnership to determine their vulnerability for that rubber bridge game and to determine the penalties that they will score for undertricks.
