💡 Conversion Tip: All Pathfinder currency uses a base-10 system. Multiply by 10 to go up a denomination (10 cp = 1 sp, 10 sp = 1 gp, 10 gp = 1 pp) and divide by 10 to go down.
🎯 Party Wealth: When splitting treasure, convert everything to copper first, divide equally, then convert back. This avoids rounding errors and ensures fair distribution among party members.

Pathfinder is a tabletop roleplaying game where heroes go to beat monsters and escape traps with bad guys But how does money work in this world? The most used currencies are gold pieces (gp) and silver pieces (sp). One gp is 10 sp.

Also, 1 sp is 10 copper pieces (cp) and 10 gp are one platinum piece (pp). Characters start the game with 15 gp (or 150 sp) to buy gear.

How Money Works in Pathfinder

Each character starts with a set amount of gold that you can spend on weapons, armor and other gear. You assume that character has at least one set of normal clothes. Players can choose from various clothing sets, for instance those of artisan, artist, investigator, monk, peasant, scholar or traveller.

When campaign starts at higher level, or when new player joins a group, or even if character dies and you must create new, not all start at the first level. In such times, the Character Wealth table shows how many common items of various levels the character should hve, besides the currency.

Pathfinder is balanced so that the game master gives income through loot. Basically, that is the main way characters get rich. Characters and their assistants can win a small amount of money each week during downtime.

You can simply “take 10” and receive a set amount of gold per week without rolling dice. Even so, if some want to win a lot of money in the world of Pathfinder, making magic items is the best way.

But here is a problem. Magic crafting does not always give profit, because making an item costs exactly what you receive selling it. Items are made at half price, but you can sell them only at half of the value in normal circumstances.

Characters also can use their skills to win money during down time. The game master decides the task level that represents the most profitable work available. Players can search for simpler tasks, and occasionally they can try to find better work than the offers.

One funny conversion that works is that 1 gp is around 65 USD. By using that conversion, you can look at the cost of living in Pathfinder according to the rules of the Core Rulebook. A normal farmer with three children indeed can afford to buy a potion of healing, which surprises many.

Nobles that rule farmers could win a good monthly income based on the money made by their serfs.
