Adjacency is the main mechanic behind Kingdom Builder. Unless there’s some sort of terrain feature or action that permits it, you can’t put down a settlement directly adjacent to another. Because of nearby terrain scoring, that input is critical. It makes you look at the overall pressure on the board and decide between safe move and aggressive ones. Short-term needs frequently conflict with the endgame strategy defined by the objective cards. Water adjacency gets rewarded by a fisherman card. But putting out water could leave your worker isolated from early point-generating tavern chains. You can’t afford to create slow location chains that don’t directly feed into the final score. When the clock’s ticking down, the tool notes that tempo become less important.
Then there are expansions such as Marshlands or Nomads that shift how some terrains matters by adding depth. For example, Marshlands introduces new terrain types that create new blocking patterns. Selecting an expansion rule in the inputs will change our understanding of the expected risk/reach. That’s helpful, because knowing what works on each terrain just doesn’t apply to situations with more objectives or extra actions.
