💡Authority Tips

Outpost timing: In Star Realms, normal combat has to clear outposts before it can hit authority. Enter the shields that will actually block this attack, not every base on the table.
Draw humility: A comeback line with 80% draw odds is very different from one with 30% draw odds. Use the forecast margin to decide whether to race or stabilize.

Most Star Realms games don’t end dramatically: Usually it’s more of a sigh as you realize you were three points short of having enough power to withstand that last punch. You had the cards, you had the ships, but you miscalculated numbers by a fraction. This is what separates winning from losing here. And that’s where the calculator comes into play.

It crunches all the complicated math involved when someone tries to attack your board and you try to use your own shields and healing. Now you don’t have to guess if your board position will stand up to test.

How to Use Numbers to Win Star Realms

Your life total begins with 50 per player. Authority is what we call that number. It’s a resource that’s consumed by aggression, but it functions like a buffer, right? No. Authority is your life total, and it’s a resource that gets consumed by aggression. First, it removes bases and outpost from your table when someone attacks you. That’s key, as most new player don’t think about their own defenses when calculating how much harm they’ll recieve.

Blocked combat vs. Net authority loss is where this comes into play. It shows exactly how much actual damage hits your life total. A wall of bases will soak up the punch. You won’t need to heal yourself unless it even touches you in first place.

The healing completely alters things. Faction allies or Trade Federation units gives you authority gain on your turn. That’s where the draw probability input comes in. Do you want to heal yourself? If you say yes, you are likely just hoping it will happen. Hoping isn’t a strategy. You can assign a percentage to how likely you think you are to get those answer. If it’s high enough, you should of be able to risk it more. If it’s lower, then protect what you’ve got and play conservatively.

This information shows how consistent your deck actualy is. This is where the reference table comes in handy as it provides an instant visual representation of where you stand. One to Five Authority puts you squarely within the critical zone: You’re one misstep from elimination. Every card you play will be extremely important. Don’t spend your turns trying to find cards when you might not even need them, that’s wasting precious time.

On the other hand, if you’re in the safe zone, you have some wiggle room to change gears. Because you’ve got a wide margin of error, you should stop blocking and instead focus on attacking. If they manage to counter-attack, you’ll be just fine. Those are the strategic zones that the calculator converts those raw numbers to.

Does it make sense for you to race for points? Or should you turtle up? Pressure prediction is the most advanced feature. Your enemy also plays games, and they don’t do it in a vacuum. You can predict what they’ll deal and put that into a simulation for the future. Now you know how long your defenses lasts until they collapse in on themselves. It moves you away from thinking about immediate survival and towards the endgame.

Most people only consider state of the board before them. They fail to see the momentum gathering in the other player’s deck. The other side of authority management is psychological. If players are too conservative (racing when they should be defending), or too aggressive (defending instead of racing). The calculator takes that emotion out of it.

When you give it the data, it tells you objectively what your chances are of surviving. That helps clear up your thinking so you can take bold action when it makes sense based off the numbers. If the predicted margin is still in your favor, then you can afford to expose yourself.

Learning to win at Star Realms is all about understanding what’s best for the future without forgetting what’s most dangerous right now. This helps put those things in numbers so you can calculate them. So you can take these vague notions of danger and turn it into something you can actualy reason with. The next time you’re hanging by a thread and want to play your card, plug in the numbers first. Knowing exactly how close you are to death shifts perspective and makes every choice on the table a calculation different than a roll of the dice.
