What drives a player’s ELO is their score percentage and most people concentrate only on their ELO number. Unless you understand performance rating you might play bullet chess for years and never move your rating because you don’t know what to improve.

It will turn you away from thinking about luck and towards figuring out the odds. It’s just arithmetic at its core. The formula is games won plus half of draws divided by total games. How to Use Performance Rating to Improve Your Chess
Say you scored a percentage of 72% against an average rated 2300. You know your performance rating. It’s a straight up conversion of your dominance into points. No spreadsheet required at dinnertime; it does all the logarithm stuff for you.
The main thing to focus on is the average opponent rating. If you beat weaker opponents well, then your performance rating will be lower than the bar was set low. But if you scrape 50 percent against grandmasters, even if you lost more games then you won, your performance stays high because of strength of the opposition. They look at the performance rating they want and think, “I’ll just go out there and win x amount of games.” They fail to realize that it isn’t about simply winning. That’s just an arbitrary number, but a nice ceiling on the math in case someone shuts someone out entirely or goes undefeated. It recognizes that there’s no such thing as infinity in pairings for tournaments, so we has something practical to fall back on.
When planning a norm chase, it’s about working backwards from goal. You’re looking at an exacting percentage of what score is needed to close the point gap between where your field is averaging (e.g., 2300) vs. This is where you want to end up (e.g., 2450). This is enough for you to know not to guess whether drawing two games will bail you out or if you must go for wins each round.

Common missteps include miscalculating because you forget to include draws (which count for half a point) in the average. You might also fail to include games played against unrated players in your average at all. Those little mistakes can swing the end result either way, meaning the difference between qualifying for a title or not. They make you discipline yourself about what exactly counts towards your average. Decide which rounds need to be excluded from the average, such as forfeit rounds or non-counting rounds. Filter those out before entering the data.
Finally, the performance rating is a mirror. It reflects both your performance and who you performed against. If it’s a high number with weak opposition, it means nothing. If it’s a low number with elite company, it often means real growth. Numbers are what the tool provides. Context is what you provide.
