A domino clicking into place on the table sounds good; arguing about whose score it was doesn’t. That’s because most of the arguments occur at the spinner, the double in the middle where all train meet and the math quickly grows complex. If you have a spinner with three or four limbs branching out, it’s a mental juggling act trying to remember which pips is exposed, which ones aren’t, and how many points each one represent.

How to Master the Spinner in Dominoes

Players should also pay closer attention to the board state than what’s in their hand. To read these pressures, you need to look beyond your rack to the entire table. Also, your mental model will depend off the physical configuration. Fewer combinations and easier counting apply with a double-six set compared to a double-twelve set that has dozens of pips spread out over several arms in the spinner. With the Mexican Train style games, those open ends become a bit more fluid and the idea of blocking an end becomes more flexible.
The rules need to be understood before play. Do you count all exposed pips including connected ones? Or just the free ends? It’s a subtle difference, but makes all the difference once the final score is counted. Define it up front so there isn’t an argument later.
