Magic item-calculator is a practical aid for players of tabletop games like Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition. It mainly helps to estimate how many spell slot stay for the character for every level of magic. Spell slot form the resource that magicians use during casting of spells, so tracking them well is important.
Such calculators are especially useful during multiclassing. Multiclass magicians need a special method that mixes levels from various classes. The way it works is quite detailed.
One adds up all levels from bard, clergyman, druid, magician and other casting classes. Later one adds half of the levels in paladin and ranger, with rounding down. Third of levels in fighter or rogue counts also, but only if the character owns the Eldritch Knight or Arcane Trickster as main path.
That whole one rounds up according to the table for multiclass magicians, and there one finds the spell slot that is available.
Eldritch Knights are one-third magicians. They split their fighter level by three, to get the real caster level. To estimate what fraction of caster class, one controls the first level, when the class gives spell slot.
Levels in warlock work differently. One does not count them for the global caster level. A character with 6th level in paladin and 2nd in warlock would have spell slot of the 6th paladin level, together with separate warlock-pact spell slot.
Those warlock spell slot do not feed into the multiclass table.
Some calculators also deal with warlock-pact magic and arcane memory. They help to track what spells are known, prepared and what is the highest spell level from every class. Important to note that a character can have a spell slot for 3rd level spell from multiclassing, but no only 1st level spells from one class.
The spells must match with level, for which spell slot exist.
There is also a magic spot-calculator, that is another aid. It follows magic spots as an alternative way to cast spells in D&D 5e. Characters enter their class, level and present magic spots, later choose what spells or metamagic choice to use.
One common problem with some calculators concerns levels of artificer. In multiclassing one should round them up, but some tools do that down instead. So maybe you need to add one full artificer level by hand.
For instance, three levels in artificer match 1.5, which rounds to 2, but a wrong calculator could give only 1.
To use a magic item-calculator, one visits the website that hosts it, and enters details about the character like level and class. Correct input of info helps a lot. Always doublecheck the results according to the rules in the game manual.
There is no simple formula for spell slot that coverseverything, so those tools save real time at the game.
