💡Actionable Tip Boxes
Claim ledger tip: Before placing a milestone cube, compare the ready list against the three occupied milestone slots. If all slots are already filled, record the threshold as met but do not add milestone VP.
Award audit tip: Keep funded awards separate from milestone claims. Enter only the award VP state that has a current placement result, then add cards and city adjacency in the ledger VP field.

At first glance, Terraforming Mars look like a race to the end. But most of the game is played when you’re not taking your turn. It’s not about planting grass and warming planet. It’s about out-maneuvering three other people, each with their own secret agenda.

While it starts as a logistics puzzle early on, it eventually becomes an efficiency audit of your engines late-game. That transition is where many players lose there way. Instead of scoring points at the end of the game, they focus on surviving long enough to reach next generation.

How to Score Points in Terraforming Mars

First up are milestones, which are five victory points available for fulfilling a certain condition before start of the game. This is a critical moment in the game. Waiting too long can cost you a place and picking up a place you couldn’t hit anyway means it’s dead weight.

Your current board state is calculated for you. No need to keep several different thresholds in your head. Is your spot ready for Gardener? For Mayor? Or a Terraformer? If there is room, it will tell you. And if there isn’t.

The trick here is knowing what you’re measuring. Terraformer is easiest path to take. The oxygen track goes up. The temperature track goes up. You gain safe points. But it’s also the most contested point on the board.

To earn those points, you have to be on the board as Mayor and Gardener. Or you have to have three greenery tile or three cities. That requires an aggressive early game which changes your draft strategy. You seek out cards that put down tiles rather than ones that simply create cash. You focus on what is currenty on the board.

Other milestones provide alternative approaches. Eight building tags is a Builder milestone. It feels narrow, yet strengthens a deck oriented around production and infrastructure efficiency. Sixteen cards in hand is a Planner milestone. It punishes linear thinkers who execute their plans instead of hoarding options. It rewards control players who have a plan different than most other people’s.

If everyone aims for Terraformer, then becoming a Builder is the smart play. Milestones are also different from awards. You claim milestones up front, awards are what happen at end of game. Milestones are different than awards because you claim them as soon as you meet conditions during the game.

Each of the five categories (Landlord, Banker, Scientist, Thermalist, and Miner) highlights a unique strength. Those potential points can be plugged into calculator, which will tell you what effect that might have on your overall score. Knowing whether or not you’re ahead isn’t about claiming the award; it’s about knowing where you stand.

Even if you’re second place in an award, you’ll still earn two points. And that score often gets ignored…until it’s too late. Don’t forget to add up your ledger VP (city placement gains, adjacency bonuses, and all those points on cards). Add it up and enter it in tool. This will give you an accurate view of where you stand.

Where does the signal end and noise begin? But resources are sparse. The board fills up quickly. Panic-drawing cards becomes tempting. But then you check your awards and milestones: it grounds the game in reality. A chaotic scramble becomes a manageable race. Guesswork goes away. You begin to know. The red dust settles. The numbers don’t.
