Science in 7 Wonders commonly confuses the players. During group parties, many had to check the rules for counting the green cards. Even so after one understands the method, everything seems logical.
Green cards get points according to two modes. One scores from sets with same symbols or from sets with three different symbols. Every complete set of three different symbols gives 7 points to the player.
Moreover, doubles of symbols give score, that grows squared; so the number of one kind of symbol is squared. In the game are four green cards for every symbol, hence the maximum for one alone symbol type reach 16 ponits.
End set with all three different symbols almost always matters. Because full set delivers 7 points, during individual science symbols value 1, 3, 5 or 7 according to the number of doubles, that the player owns, the set usually benefits more. Double beats set only when the player already has four from the same symbol, what does the fifth copy worth 9 points.
Otherwise, take the set for entirely 8 points beats to collect one symbol for 7.
There even exist an Android app called Adviser for Science in 7 Wonders. It works as a calculator four the scientific part and automatically assigned unknown symbols, as those of Babylon, the Big Wall or the Scientific Guild… To their highest values.
With add-on packs like Leaders and Cities, science becomes truly wild. All the masks and leaders, that give science symbols, allow the player to theoretically collect eight or more of one symbol. That raises the question, does the square score yet count, and 64 points from one alone symbol type truly is possible.
One player claimed reached 229 points only from science in a party with Leaders, Cities and two wonders from the Wonder Pack, ending with 250 entirely. Other player got more than 80 points alone from green cards in one party with add-on packs.
In the basic version even so, reaching big Science Score profit is much more hard. Player must build wonder with science symbol on it, that opponents do not mind quite a lot and play almost perfectly in the early rounds to take all science cards together with high class resources. In three-player party, there are four copies of each from the three science symbols.
Science cards own the highest possible ceiling in the game. But blue civil cards are more reliable and have bigger average score. Players beat without any science card, but none won without at least 10 points from civil cards.
