The Ping Pong Table has one standard size for official games: it is 9 feet long, 5 feet wide and height is 2.5 feet. In metres that is around 274 cm long, 152.5 cm wide and 76 cm high, if you prefer such system. Those measures count for all approved tournaments, whether local club matches or big championships.
The real playing surface stays correctly 30 inches above the floor.
The net splits the table directly in the centre, creating two identical parts. It is 6 inches tall and stretches 6 inches past the edge of the table on both surrounding sides, which makes the whole net around 6 feet wide. White border lines mark the edges of the table, 2 cm thick line goes along the whole edge, while a fatter 3 cm line in the centre helps for double games.
Instead of thinking about buying a table, consider first the available space, because it is the main challenge. A standard Ping Pong Table requires a lot of room for good use. Usually folks require a room of around 19 feet long and 11 feet wide, so that one can play comfortably.
This way you have enough free space to swing the racket, move and respond to shots without feeling cramped. The International Federation of Table Tennis requires for contests 14 metres long and 7 metres wide area, a really huge space. For home fun though you can do with much less.
The situation gets harder if your room is too tiny. When behind the table there is only around 2.3 metres of space on every end, you can only walk back once before the space ends. Push it even more and you will hit the wall.
Playing with real force in such a tight space usually ends bad, hits against walls, broken lamps and such.
Clearly, full size is not the only option. If your area is limited, their also exist smaller versions. Models of three-quarter size measure around 81 inches long, 45 inches wide and 30 inches high.
Mini-tables do not follow fixed rules of makers, but they usually are around 6 feet long and 3 feet wide, so around a third of the standard size.
The materials of your Ping Pong Table really affect the quality a lot. The ball must bounce evenly across the whole surface. From 12 inches high it should skip upward until around 9 inches.
The thickness of the top layer determines the feel of the game. A table with 1 inch thick MDF gives a firm and real bounce. Thinner versions start to lose…
Cheaper, yes, but the jump becomes slower and sometimes wild. A 16 mm thick table works for practice, even if it is not fully precise.
Many tables come with handy storage parts for rackets and balls, so that they stay beside you. Some models have even ball holders built in, which helps to skip the hunting of balls during the game. The ability tostore depends on the chosen model.
