DIY: How to Build Your Own Ping Pong Table

We all just want to have fun. After having a long week at work, with so much on our plates, the last thing we want to do is come back to a home without anything fun to do in it.

Everyone has their own idea of fun; some people love playing sports or going to the gym, while others love video games or settling down and watching a movie.

No matter what you want to do, you have to make sure there is some balance in your life.

This will consistently make you happy and make certain that you are ready to start work the next day.

One of the best things to have around the house, in our opinion, is a game room! Game rooms are ways of bringing the family together to play games when you are interacting with each other.

These days, all of us are so connected to technology that sometimes it is hard to actually connect and get to know one another.

It is so important that you take the time to “unplug” and join together for a common activity.

We have found that if you take the time to sit down and have dinner, and just spend a bit afterwards having fun with your family in the games room, it is going to do a lot.

If you are living a single life, a games room is fantastic to have people over and give you something to do together.

One of the must-haves in a game room is a ping pong table. Ping pong is a great game, and it is fun for any age.

It is an easy game and loads of fun for the entire family!

Buying a ping pong table

So out of all things, why get a ping pong table? One of the main reasons that people are often drawn to ping pong tables is that no matter what your age is, you can easily use them to your full advantage.

There are so many other games that you can play, that maybe someone under 10 will not be able to pick up on, but ping pong is fun for everyone!

Something that is great about ping pong is that it is easy to learn.

So even if you have never played before, and this is your first time, you are still going to be able to get a lot of enjoyment out of it.

Ping pong tables can be expensive to buy, and some of us cannot afford the luxury buying a commercially built model.

This is why we have created a guide on how to build your own ping pong table, which is going to save you money.

If you need to see diagrams or outlines of what you will need to do, simply just “Google” search for it, or check out tutorials on YouTube and they will be there.

If you follow this guide, it is going to be pretty straightforward and easy to build your own ping pong table.

One of the best things about it is that it is going to save you money.

We all know how much storage means to you, so this ping pong table is going to be fully foldable, making it easy to put away whenever you are not using it.

What you will need

  • 2 pieces of lumber that measure 9 feet (2x2)
  • 4 pieces of lumber that measure 5 feet (2x2)
  • Screws
  • Two wooden pieces that have been pressed measuring 4/12 by 5
  • Plywood
  • Clamps
  • Roller for paint
  • Tape
  • A circular saw
  • Drill
  • Hinges for doors (4)
  • Glue for wood
  • Paint
  • Paint brush
  • Net that is 6 inches tall

The base

The first thing you need to do is to get the base ready for your table. Take the two pieces that measure 9 feet and cut them in half.

Lay the ends together to form the sides of a rectangle. This will be the base of your ping pong table

Making the legs

The legs of the ping pong table will need to be 29 ½ inches tall. This is going to provide optimum height for a lot of players.

The way to achieve this height is to cut two of the 2x2 pieces down into four pieces that measure 29 ½ inches. If you want to design it further you can.

You can attach the legs to the four corners of the base that you made before using either nails or screws, depending on your preferences

The hinges

As we said before, this table is going to fold, but the only way it will work is through hinges.

You need to put four of the hinges on the bottom side in equal distances from each other. You can use the hinges to connect two of the pressed wood pieces.

Screw the hinges to the bottom of these pieces, and then put them onto the base.

Doing the plywood

In order to have a surface for the ball to bounce, and to cover any nails or screws that you used, you need plywood. Take a lot of glue and add it to the two wooden pieces.

Put the sheets of plywood on top of the surface, applying clamps in order to keep them together while the glue dries.

Painting the table

Figuring out the paint colors of the table is completely up to you. Do not forget to paint the serving lines. You can find outlines for this online.

Adding the net

The net is another very important piece for your table, and should be the last thing you put on, tying it end to end.

Conclusion

By following all of the steps above, you will easily be able to build your own ping pong table. We wish you all the best on your build and your future time playing this great game.
