Analyze role coverage, spell slots & skill proficiencies for your 5e adventuring party
The classic group of D&D usually includes a rogue, wizard, cleric and fighter. This known combination gives the group access to divine and arcane magic while it provides some strong fighters. Although such a group is not always the most exciting it serves as the standard to balance any group.
From a game viewpoint, the composition of the group is about ensuring versatilty and power. A balanced team can effectively respond to various situations. They cover all bases: can take damage, attack, escape dangers by stealth and tricks, gather info and charm NPCs.
The composition of the group, or party comp in a nutshell, is the combination of characters that creates a team. Anyone who played RPGs like Baldur’s Gate, World of Warcraft or Dragon Age knows that there is an expectation about how you build such groups.
During fights, the fighter and cleric face the enemy. The wizard uses the wonderful world of magic to control the field. Meanwhile, the rogue focuses on precise attacks against one target.
The cleric cares about the health of the group while the fighter simply attacks the opponents. This composition is not locked to particular subclasses, so players can change it when they get their subclasses.
In 5e there is no such thing as an ideal composition. The only exception is if the group always travels in particular places, for instance the Underdark. Ultimately, the best group is simply what the players want to play.
A good basic setup is one magic user, one healer, one combat class and one rogue. That creates a nice balance for a small team. Reading the Player’s Handbook helps you know the available classes and species.
Then there are more creative choices. The Animal Lover Party is made up of Monk, Barbarian, Ranger and Druid. Many classes in D&D work with creatures, whether by talking, summoning, having a companion or transforming into a creature.
This is an excellent composition where all types of fur babies lead the ride.
The ranger can back the fighter at the frontline, but also works as a specialist to weaken the enemy before they reach melee. The cleric is the back and the lifeline of the group. Having one meat shield and one dedicated healer matters no matter what the gameis.
