💡 Multiclass Slot Rule: When multiclassing, add up your spellcasting levels (full = 1x, half = 0.5x rounded down, 1/3 = 0.33x rounded down), then look up the combined total on the Full Caster table. Warlock slots are tracked separately using the Pact Magic table and recover on a short rest.
💡 Spell Save DC Formula: Spell Save DC = 8 + Proficiency Bonus + Spellcasting Ability Modifier. Spell Attack Bonus = Proficiency Bonus + Spellcasting Ability Modifier. A level 5 Wizard with 18 INT (+4) and +3 proficiency has a Save DC of 15 and Spell Attack Bonus of +7.

Magic items in Dungeons and Dragons show the energy that one must spend to cast a spell. They work as a tool for mages, really as a measure of magic power. A simple spell needs only a bit of force so it uses an item of lower level.

A character that casts a spell then uses an item at the level of that spell or even higher, which fills that with the magic.

How Spell Slots Work in D&D

A simple picture helps to understand: imagine a chocolate bar of a certain size. A little one stands for a first level Spell Slot while a bigger one serves for higher spells. A spell of first level fits in a Spell Slot of any size.

But a second level spell needs a Spell Slot of at least second size. Like this a Spell Slot of second level is useful for a first or second spell, but the other way around it is not possible.

The amount and size of Spell Slots available deepnd on the level of the caster character. It is counted from the amount of all levels in full casting classes, plus half or third for partial casting classes. There even exist websites with calculators, that exactly show how many Spell Slots one has according to levels through various casting classes in D&D 5e.

Characters first learn or prepare a clear list of spells that they want to use. Later, to cast one of them, one spends a Spell Slot of the right level. Using a Spell Slot does not remove the spell itself from knowledge.

The spell stays known. The character simply loses there skill to cast spells of that level for the day. Simple spells however always work for free.

Here is a sample. A character of second level with two Spell Slots, that knows Armour of Agathys, Hex and Nice Personality, could use Hex a second time, or Armour of Agathys together with Nice Personality, or any other mix of two casts. At third level a sorcerer gets an extra first level Spell Slot, which raises the total to four, and two new Spell Slots of second level open.

So they now also can cast spells of second level.

Spell Slots refill after rest. They show how many spells a magician can use during a long rest, that lasts eight hours. There are ways to win extra Spell Slots.

Leveling up brings new ones based on the tier of every class. Magicians own a special skill, by which they turn unused magic spots into a fresh Spell Slot as a bonus action.

In the world of the game characters do not really mention Spell Slots. It is only a game word for the players. A magician that used up all his Spell Slots would describe that as tiredness or mental drain or empty reserves.

Most tabletop rules treat Spell Slots as an unseen game tool, but one usesin-game language that fits.
