Base Attack Bonus or BAB is one of the most key numbers on the Pathfinder character sheet. It determines the basic chance to hit an enemy, if no other modifier affects the result. This bonus applies to attacks with weapons, natural attacks and some spells, but it does not help with damage rolls
Characters with low progression will be less precise, because BAB is added to every attack. Even so, classes with low progression commonly win very strong features, that make up for the low BAB. Every class has a table, that shows the Base Attack Bonus, the Base Saves and special abilities got at every level.
If you have levels only in one class, you simply look at the BAB value on that table.
There are three progresses for the attack bonus. Classes with d6 Hit Dice increase their BAB by 1/2 each level. For those with d8, the increase is 3/4 each level.
Lastly, classes with d10 or d12 win full 1 each level. BAB depends directly on the level of the class; for creatures, it bases on the number of Hit Dice.
Rogues, for instance, have 3/4 BAB. Although they commonly fight physically, they are not trained as full warriors. Instead, they master trickery and the art of positioning to flank the opponent.
The total chance to hit is the sum of BAB, the relevant attribute (like strength or dexterity), weapon focus, enchantments and other helps, for instance from a heroism spell or bard song. Iterative attacks are additional chances to attack, that you receive having high BAB. To count the second and third attacks, you subtract 5 from the base.
If the result stays positive, you receive an additional attack. For instance, Fighter 6/Barbarian 6 has +12 BAB; subtract 5, still positive, giving +12/+7.
Multiclassing works by adding all BAB values together, and later you recalculate the additional attacks. For a character that is an 11th-level fighter and 9th-level rogue, you add +11 to +6, causing a BAB of +17. That gives additional attacks at +12, +7 and +2.
Some feats require a minimum BAB to be chosen, even so there is no feat that directly increases the BAB. When a creature does a combat maneuver with its second attack, it uses the BAB of that particular attack. For instance, a creature with BAB of +6/+1, that trips with the second attack, will use +1 as its base.
One last detail: masterwork weapons give a +1 bonus to the attack, which occasionally can confuse folks when they count the totalnumbers.
