💡 Tip: The Bingo Bonus — In Words With Friends, playing all 7 tiles from your rack in a single turn earns a bonus of +35 points on top of your word score. Plan for this when you have a full rack of useful tiles!
💡 Tip: Stacking Bonuses — Word multipliers (DW, TW) apply after all letter multipliers (DL, TL) have been calculated. If a word covers two DW squares, multiply the word score by total. Two TW squares = total!

Words With Friends is a famous online word game for several players, where the players take turns forming words in the style of crossword puzzles. It is a lot like the traditional board game Scrabble, although there are some changes. Newtoy created the game, and later Zynga bought it.

The players get to play up to 30 games at the same time with friends from different countries.

What is Words With Friends?

The slogan sums it up well (“May the best friend win).” One can play it alone or with friends in multiplayer mode. There are solo tasks against funny made-up characters that get updated monthly with fresh themes and enemies. Also there is casual matching of opponents for those that want to train their crossword skills against strangers.

Something that makes this game different from Scrabble is that it only allows valid words for teh players. It is not possible to bluff. During normal Scrabble, bluffing commonly plays an important role, but here that part is missing.

The word list is based on the Improved North American Standard Lexicon, known also as MEAN. That is a free public list that many word games use, and it stores around 173 000 words. Zynga takes care of its own version of that list and added changes over the years, also several new words.

There is no way to protest against a word, because Zynga alone decided what counts.

When one plays the final tile, the opponent loses points equal too the total value of their remaining tiles. That amount then goes to the person that lays the last tile.

The game includes in-game chat, that the players can use or skip. It helps folks stay in contact during the game. Some players managed to exchange private messages through the app, although that does not always lead to deeper friendships outside of the program.

The game already exists almost fifteen years, which is quite a long time.

There is a version for board game. Hasbro and Zynga issued physical versions of their most liked online games, and Words With Friends was among them. Families that liked the app version asked how the board version would work.

The game uses two different platforms on separate servers. One is the main game, while the other works with Facebook Messenger. Any player can use both and needs a different account for each of them.

Words With Friends enjoys strong visibility on Facebook, with more than four millions of likes on its page. There is also an official subreddit and YouTube channel. The players can follow their progress through unlockable statistics, andthe game stays present thanks to features like Letter Lock, Legendary Run, crossword puzzles and Dice Challenge.
