🎯 PL vs. Points: Power Level is a simplified system — 1 PL equals roughly 18–22 points on average, though this varies widely by unit. Strike Force at 100 PL equates to approximately 2,000 matched play points.
⚡ Buffer Factor: Add a 10% buffer to your target PL to avoid accidentally going over. For a 100 PL Strike Force, aim for 90–100 PL when building your list to leave room for enhancements.
📐 Table Size Matters: Strike Force games require a 72" x 48" (183 x 122 cm) table. Combat Patrol and Incursion use a smaller 44" x 30" (112 x 76 cm) board — confirm your table before setting up deployment.
🏰 Detachment Balance: A single Battalion Detachment typically provides the best Command Point value. For most Strike Force games (100 PL), 1–2 detachments keeps your roster efficient and well within force org limits.

Power Level in Warhammer 40k gives a rough way to measure the force of a unit on the battlefield. Every unit in its data sheet has a value for Power Level which quickly shows how well it works compared to the rest. Thanks to that system, players can build two almost equal armies right away without losing time with detailed list-creation.

What most separates Power Level from points is the depth of their calculation. Points break down everything carefully. Take a sample: a space marine tactical squad has a level of 5, but the points cost goes more carefully with cost for every weapon and gear.

What Power Level Means in Warhammer 40k

Power Level simplifies everything and skips many such details.

One weak spot of Power Level is the flexibility of unit sizes. One can take a unit of imperial guard soldiers with 21 or 30 models, and the level price stays the same. That clearly allows adding extra bodies to a unit for free, where balance gets a bit shaky.

In the starter set Dark Empire, the army of Death Guard has 42 Power Levels while that of Ultramarines reaches around 50. For points, that difference matches almost 60 to 70, which does not seem well balanced.
