In Round Robin system, every participant plays against all other participants, none is excluded. It differs from elimination tournament, where one single defeat can end your whole run. Round Robin ensures real fairness because none goes home early; each has a chance to compete against the whole group.
The origin of that phrase is quite interesting. “Round” clearly relates to something circular, while “robin” probably comes from French terms like “rond ruban” or “ronde robine“. The circular idea started in one area and later spread to many different areas.
Believe it or not, among the earliest uses of “Round Robin” was a signed document. Think of that: a letter with signatures sorted in a round. The idea was clever, by setting names in a circle, no one could tell who signed first.
That hiding was important, because it protected the real leader against attack from authorities, for instance troublemakers. Each recieved the same safety.
Sporting tournaments commonly use Round Robin format. Whether you want to know, how many matches happen? The math is easy, take the number of teams, remove one, and split the result by two.
For six teams that gives five games for each, or a bit more according to the rules. Usually the best finishers pass to finals, which keeps all parts competitive, because teams struggle for better position. If too teams are equal in upper places, direct matches between them can settle the tie.
Round Robin works well also in computing, where systems apply it for planning tasks. It works like this: every process gets an equal part of time. The system goes through the processes in round mode.
When a process ends its time amount, it passes to the next in the line. That loop repeats until all tasks end. This method works especially for time-sharing systems and is like first-come-first-served planning, except that it can switch between processes.
One finds it in embedded systems, sometimes called multitasking.
In sports betting, Round Robin betting is made up of a group of parlays, that covers every possible mix of your choices. Assume that you have four different bets. Round Robin creates parlays from all those combos.
The main benefit is, that one wrong choice does not destroy your whole bet. A normal parlay flops in one go, but Round Robin can pay even if one or two choices fail. The most sportsbooks show the full price and possible prize at first.
Even so, if you add too many choices, profit becomesdifficult, because some losing mixes are unavoidable.
