Pinochle is a famous game with cards, that was played for centuries in Europe and America. It belongs to the group of games about tricks and meld that carries also belote. Today one plays chiefly the version called partner auction pinochle.
Every hand is made up of three phases: bid, meld and playing of tricks. One uses decks of 48 cards and the main task is to seize tricks together with assembly of particular groups to reach points.
What does exactly mean meld? Meld is the assembly of cards, that gives points before start of the tricks. The players show some groups from their hand to receive points.
One same card it is possible to use in several melds, if they are of different kinds. For instance, the queen of spades can serve for marriage and for pinochle too.
The meld of pinochle itself is made up of the queen of spades and the jack of diamonds. That group is worth 4 points. Double pinochle gives 30 points, triple pinochle reaches 45 points.
Quadruple pinochle is worth far moer than 300 points. Truly huge difference here.
There are many other melds. The run forms the ace, ten, king, queen and jack from the trump color, what is worth 15 points for one. Royal marriage is the king and queen of the trump color, worth 4 points.
Regular marriage is made up of king and queen of any non-trump color, what gives 2 points. The nine of trump is worth 1 point. In some versions, the lowest trump card it is possible to meld for 10 points.
“Arounds” melds are those, that have one or more matching cards in each of the four colors. Aces around is worth around 10 points, kings around around 8, queens around around 6 and jacks around about 4. If doubled, those numbers grow a lot, double aces around reach around 100, double kings 80, double queens 60 and double jacks 40.
Some cards and groups give more, if they hold the trump color. Who beats the bid, that chooses the trump color and trades three cards with his partner. That trade one considers very important, because it helps too prepare better melds, like double pinochle or aces around.
In the double deck version of pinochle, the trump color must have at least marriage or something better, otherwise the team right away loses the bid.
Meld is not almost only luck. It requires real strategy. The bid can point to the partner, how many meld points one has.
For instance, a little extra in the bid shows to the partner, that the player wants to check, whether it is possible to share meld. Experts usually guess, that theirpartner owns around 8 to 10 points from meld.
